Spot Removal Q&A

What are age spots?

Age spots, also known as liver spots or sunspots, are small, dark, flat spots that people develop from UV light and sun exposure. The body darkens its skin in an attempt to protect itself from further sun damage.
Most often, age spots appear on people over the age of 50, but if they spend enough time in the sun, younger people can develop them as well. They’re also more common in fair skinned adults. Most age spots:

  • Are tan to dark brown
  • Appear on the upper back, shoulders, face, back of hands, or chest
  • Range from the size of a freckle to half an inch across

If your spots exhibit any of the following behaviors, you should schedule an appointment with your health provider to get them evaluated before undergoing IPL, as it could indicate skin cancer:

  • Bleeding
  • Changing
  • Scabbing that does not heal
  • Asymmetry
  • Irregular border
  • Multiple colors within same spot
  • Increasing diameter (growing)

At Meridian Aesthetics and Wellness, we will evaluate your skin before treatment and may recommend not to undergo IPL in an area containing an irregular spot suspicious for skin cancer until the spot is evaluated fully by your healthcare provider.

How do you perform spot removal?

True “age spots” aren’t dangerous, but if you don’t like the way they look, Meridian Aesthetics and Wellness can lighten or remove them for you with our Icon Laser multiplatform device.

The Icon laser device has numerous handpieces to provide you with the most effective treatment, including the team’s preferred handpieces, the MaxG and MaxY.

Icon MaxG

Our Icon MaxG handpiece is designed to lighten and remove spots on the face. In addition to regular spots, the Icon MaxG can treat rosacea, spider veins, angioma, hemangioma, and port wine stains.

Icon MaxY

Our Icon MaxY treats spots, including freckles, on the body, and is also effective for hair removal on all skin types. It cannot treat large varicose veins of the legs.

How does spot removal with Icon work?

Both Icon MaxG and Icon MaxY harness the power of light energy through a process called Intense-Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy, to destroy undesirable pigment and clear up spots.

We also use the patented Skintel Reader to read your melanin index (skin tone) to determine the best settings for you skin type.

When we use this light energy through the Icon handpiece, it passes harmlessly through the top layer of your skin and into the second layer, where your pigment cells absorb it and convert the light energy into heat energy, thus destroying the pigment.

After your treatment, you can return to the regular activities of your day. You may experience some minor redness and a mild sunburn-like feeling immediately following your treatment. However, side effects such as these usually go away within 1 to 24 hours. We recommend wearing sunscreen daily to prevent sun damage and may recommend it after certain treatments while your skin is still sensitive.
