Spot Removal Q&A

What are age spots?

Age spots, also known as liver spots or sunspots, are small, dark, flat spots that people develop from sun exposure. The body darkens its skin in an attempt to protect itself from further sun damage.

Most often, age spots appear on people over the age of 50, but if they spend enough time in the sun, younger people can develop them as well. They’re also more common in fair skinned adults. Most age spots:

  • Are tan to dark brown
  • Appear on the upper back, shoulders, face, back of hands, or tops of feet
  • Range from the size of a freckle to half an inch across

If your spots are black, and/or exhibit any of the following behaviors, they’re not age spots, and you should schedule an appointment to get them checked out:

  • Bleeding
  • Growing

Also seek medical attention if your spots have irregularly shaped borders or they’re made up of an unusual mix of colors. Spots and changes in spots like these could be signs of melanoma.

How do you perform spot removal?

True age spots aren’t dangerous, but if you don’t like the way they look, Meridian Primary Care can lighten or remove them for you. To do so, the practice uses the Icon laser multiplatform device.

The Icon laser device has numerous handpieces to provide you with the most effective treatment, including the team’s preferred handpieces, the MaxG and MaxY.

Icon MaxG

In addition to regular spots, the Icon MaxG can treat rosacea, spider veins, angioma, hemangioma, and port wine stains on all skin types.

Icon MaxY

Icon MaxY treats spots, including freckles, and is also effective for hair removal on all skin types.

How does spot removal with Icon work?

Both Icon MaxG and Icon MaxY harness the power of light energy through a process called intense-pulsed light (IPL) therapy, to destroy undesirable pigment and clear up spots.

When your team delivers this light energy through the Icon handpiece, it passes harmlessly through the top layer of your skin and into the second layer, where your pigment cells absorb it and convert the light energy into heat energy, thus destroying the pigment.

After your treatment, you can return to the regular activities of your day. You may experience some minor swelling and a mild burn-like sensation immediately following your treatment. However, side effects such as these usually go away within 2-24 hours.

If you have brown or tan spots on your skin that bother you, don’t try to cover them up with makeup or spend money on expensive creams. Instead, try non-invasive spot removal with Meridian Primary Care. To learn more, call the practice or schedule an appointment using the online booking tool.
