Skin Resurfacing Q & A

What is skin resurfacing?

Skin resurfacing is a procedure that addresses irregular tones and textures on your skin. As you age, your skin gathers damage on the surface from the sun, artificial UV light sources like tanning beds, smoking, and general collagen loss with age. You may also have acne scars that you would like to remove.

The team at Meridian Primary Care uses the versatile Icon laser by Cynosure to remove the top layers of your skin and much of the damage on them. At the same time, the heat from the laser warms the lower surfaces of your skin to boost collagen production. You can treat your face, neck, chest, and other areas of skin that could use resurfacing to restore youthfulness or clarity.

What are the results of skin resurfacing?

Skin resurfacing treatments target and reduce both textural issues and uneven tones. After a skin resurfacing treatment with Icon, you may see a reduction in the following features.

  • Fine lines
  • Wrinkles
  • Acne scars
  • Injury scars
  • Age spots
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Large pores
  • Redness

Despite treating some wrinkles and fine lines, skin resurfacing treatments don’t tighten skin that is very loose and saggy. However, they can help make your skin firmer over time as new collagen fibers develop. The treatment works regardless of your natural skin tone.

How long does it take to recover after a skin resurfacing treatment?

With the Icon laser, the results are optimal and the downtime is minimal. You might need to take two to three days to rest and recover, but you can go right home after the procedure is complete. After evaluating your skin, your provider can tell you if you need a series of treatments to reach the results you want.

You might notice some slight peeling or scabbing as your skin sheds its surface layer in your treated areas. You must keep your skin clean and protect it from direct sunlight, and your provider at Meridian Primary Care may recommend a mild moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated. Your skin is extra sensitive to the sun for up to a year after a skin resurfacing procedure, so it’s important to find a sunscreen that you can use daily.
